Oral history and fragments in Southeast Asia

I recall--if I dare attempt such a risky thing--an interview with the late Lord Milverton at the House of Lords. Much earlier in his career he had been A.

What he remembered some forty years on seemed to be rather what he wanted his letter to achieve rather than what it seemed to me to state. Interviewing the elite is by no means uncommon, though perhaps it is better done without the written source in hand.

Oral history is, however, more often associated with attempts to give voice to those whose records would not normally be found among the despatches in the national archives. That has been done, of course, by recourse to other archives, most copiously, perhaps, by James Warren. It has also been associated with the genre of 'subaltern studies' and with the work, for example, of Gyanendra Pandey and his concept of 'fragments'. It is the latter that particularly inflects the essays in this book, which began as a collection of papers presented at a conference held in Singapore in , 'Historical fragments in Southeast Asia: At the interfaces of oral history, memory and heritage'.

Pandey conceptualised the 'fragment' as 'a trace of a lost history and a fracture within the dominant narrative' p. It was an attractive, if somewhat adventurous, topic in Southeast Asia, where nationalism is strong, and governments promote its grand narratives, and the resultant book adds a new piquancy to the distinguished Palgrave series Studies in Oral History, belatedly bringing the region into its purview.

It was all the more attractive and adventurous in Singapore. This book offers a view from Southeast Asia, where oral history is embryonic and state led but is also being socially contested and redefined.
